Why Play is Valuable for a Child in Early Childhood Education

Why Play is Valuable for a Child in Early Childhood Education

The Oxford dictionary describes play as: to fulfill, to occupy oneself, to have the ability to perform, to undertake or exercise activities for pleasure.

Not any particular child, but every child in any nation, environment or circumstance needs play. It’s absolutely necessary for children to play, to express themselves social, emotionally and physically. Play allows itself to be an individual creation or to be shared with others, it can be pulled in any direction letting it be turned into anything a child would like, preparing a healthy start to a lifetime of learning. Play is so special that its generosity even includes having fun; in fact that is one of the most important things about it. It has so many benefits that head off in every direction developing all the important ingredients for strong head start in a child life.

It is the adults job to explore the conditions which are best for maximizing the potential benefits of play for children to develop these social skills. One of the ways to do this is to provide and encourage games that are fun, exciting and positive for children. Many social skills are learnt through co-operative activities allowing the child to learn how to confidently form stronger friendships and relationships with siblings and parents.

Activities that involve interacting with others teach children not only about themselves but also about other childrens feeling needs and wants. Since they have learnt to value others’ emotions they develop skills to handle confrontations and conflicts in the future.

It’s also important for a child to develop physical strengths along with the social and emotional. Play has a huge impact in this development for children of varying ages, abilities and interests. Physical play strengthens a child’s fine motor skills as well as gross motor skills. Fine motor skills include such things as eye, mouth, wrist, finger and toe movements, whereas motor skills are the exercise of the larger muscle groups like the arms, legs and torso. This motor play provides critical opportunities for childrens overall strengthening of muscles, nerves and brain stimulation.

Play involves social, emotional, and physical learning. Included in all these types of learning comes cognitive development, an important result of play. Play gives children the opportunity to understand the world, interact with others in social ways and to express and control emotions. Play is a child’s opportunity to practice the skills they are building, and to try out new tasks. This gives them the framework and knowledge to solve more complex problems. All these things are needed for a child to get a healthy start in life. But the most important part of play is having fun. Play and fun are inseparable from each other. Without play, fun doesnt exist and without fun play cant exist.

Symptoms of Pregnancy Abdominal Pain

Symptoms of Pregnancy Abdominal Pain

If there is just one constant in the art of pregnancy it is change. Your body starts to change from the moment of conception. Those early changes go undetected, but soon the smallest changes evolve into bigger changes and symptoms of pregnancy develop. Abdominal pain is a common symptom of pregnancy, but just because many women feel pain does not mean all pain is created equal. During pregnancy it is extremely important to keep track of abdominal aches and pains and contact your doctor immediately if something does not feel quite right.

Safe Abdominal Pain

You are growing a baby inside your womb and that requires your body to change drastically. Your abdomen will stretch, grow and move in ways you never thought possible, quite often causing pain as one of the symptoms of pregnancy. You can expect irritation of the abdominal skin as that skin grows to accommodate the expanding uterus. There may also be slight cramping in early pregnancy and throughout the third trimester as the uterus begins to practice contractions – called Braxton Hicks contractions. These are typically considered safe abdominal pains during pregnancy, but when it comes to pain you are the true judge. Never be afraid to call your physician if you are experiencing abdominal pain of any kind.

Unsafe Abdominal Pains

Passing bright red blood is not one of the safe symptoms of pregnancy. Some women experience spotting early in the pregnancy when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus – known as implantation bleeding. This bleeding should not be as heavy as a normal period. There may also be some spotting at the end of the pregnancy when the mucus plug is released from the cervix, but again the bleeding should be limited to minimal spotting. There may be some cramping associated with implantation bleeding, but the release of the cervical plug typically goes unnoticed as no pain is associated with the release. Cramping of any kind – either associated with bleeding or not – should be reported immediately to your physician.

There are many aches and pains associated with symptoms of pregnancy, but abdominal pain is typically mild, associated with your growing uterus and inconsistent. Consistent or persistent pain may be associated with pregnancy complications or preterm labor and should be a cause for concern. If the pains appear to follow a regular pattern, increase in intensity, duration and frequency, you could be in labor. Labor pains before your expected due date, give or take a week or two, require a doctor’s visit or trip to the emergency room.

Effective Communication The Key To Successful Conflict Resolution In A Long Distance Relationship

Effective Communication The Key To Successful Conflict Resolution In A Long Distance Relationship

Long distance relationships are not immune to the conflicts that occasionally rare up in all forms of human interactions. The first time that a conflict occurs between a couple in a long distance relationship, they are likely to get alarmed wondering whether the conflict could be a signal that their relationship is headed for the rocks. After all, long distance love relationships are delicate, or arent they?

Well, the occurrence of a conflict in a relationship in which the partners are separated by distance doesnt necessarily signal the beginning of the end for that relationship. How well your long distance relationship survives the conflicts that come its way depends to a very great extend on how you handle the conflicts and attempt to resolve them.

There are three keys to successful conflict resolution in long distance relations (as in all relationships indeed), namely communication, communication and communication.

Communication has variously been described as the bridge that bridges the chasm that is human misunderstanding. Now a common thread that runs in all conflicts that affect human interactions is a feeling that one is not being understood, or that ones point of view is being looked down upon. And petty as these feelings sound on paper, they can actually be very painful when it is you who is experiencing them. But whatever the cause of conflict in a long distance relationship, and whatever the emotional feelings underlying it, you (either as the party who has been wronged or as the allegedly at-fault party) will have to communicate properly with other party to the long distance relationship, if your conflict is to have an amicable resolution.

Communication as used in conflict resolution basically means making an effort to see things from the other partys point of view, even if you dont accept with that point of view. Once you can communicate to the other party that you are seeing things from their point of view (or at least making an attempt to), then you would be in a position to put your own point of view across to them with a greater chance of success. And once you can see things from the other partys point of view, and the other party can see things from your point of view, you have a better chance of finding a midpoint or a compromise position between your points of view on whatever issue happens to be the source of your conflict and thereby resolve the conflict amicably.

More from the Sister Study

More from the Sister Study

In the March 17, 2009 issue of Life Extension Update, we reported the finding from the Sister Study, a cohort of healthy sisters of breast cancer patients, of a beneficial association between multivitamin use and telomere length, a biomarker of aging. Telomeres, which are repeating DNA sequences that cap the ends of chromosomes, shorten with increased cellular aging.

In articles published in the February and March, 2009 issues of the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, further findings from the Sister Study concerning the impact of lifestyle on telomere length were revealed.

In the February, 2009 issue, Christine Parks, PhD, of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and her associates evaluated the effect of stress on telomere length in 647 Sister Study participants. Telomere length in DNA from blood samples was measured, and stress hormone levels in urine were assessed. Questionnaires completed by the subjects provided information on perceived stress levels.

Study participants, on average, reported low stress levels. “Even so, women who reported above-average stress had somewhat shorter telomeres, but the difference in telomere length was most striking when we looked at the relationship between perceived stress and telomere length among women with the highest levels of stress hormones,” Dr Parks observed. “Among women with both higher perceived stress and elevated levels of the stress hormone epinephrine, the difference in telomere length was equivalent to or greater than the effects of being obese, smoking or 10 years of aging.”

In the report that appeared in the March, 2009 issue of the journal, the effect of past and current body mass index (BMI) on telomere length was examined. Sister Study participants whose BMI categorized them as overweight or obese before or during their thirties and whose weight status was maintained were found to have shorter telomeres compared to subjects who became overweight at an older age. “This suggests that duration of obesity may be more important than weight change per se, although other measures of overweight and obesity were also important,” stated lead author Sangmi Kim, PhD, also of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. “Our results support the hypothesis that obesity accelerates the aging process”.

“We anticipate a wealth of information to come out of the Sister Study,” predicted Dale Sandler, PhD, chief of the Epidemiology Branch at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and principal investigator of the Sister Study. “Not only do we hope to find out more about the environmental and genetic factors that might lead to breast cancer, we also want to learn more about how factors such as stress, diet and exercise might impact cancer and other disease risks.”

“Together these two studies reinforce the need to start a healthy lifestyle early and maintain it,” National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences director Linda Birnbaum, PhD, concluded. “These papers remind us that there are things people can do to modify their behavior and live healthier lives, such as maintain a healthy weight and cultivate healthy responses to stress.”

Report Shows Increasing Trend Of Destinations Weddings With 1 In 4 Couples Getting Married Abroad

Report Shows Increasing Trend Of Destinations Weddings With 1 In 4 Couples Getting Married Abroad

According to a recently released wedding study published by the founder of two top wedding sites, WeddingChannel.com and The Knot.com, destination weddings continue rising in popularity as a popular alternative to more traditional weddings at home.

The results of the second edition of The Knot Market Intelligence Destination Wedding Study were recently published and its findings revealed that the trend for getting married abroad increased among engaged couples in 2012.

Considered to be the most definitive report on the industry of weddings abroad, this study tracked over 350,000 destination weddings by storing detailed information on wedding trends, events and locations of the weddings of around 3,000 US couples who got married abroad in 2011 or 2012.

The statistics of the 2012 Destination Weddings Study revealed a series of trends with the top key trends identified as follows:

In 2011, nearly 1 in 4 (24%) couples had a destination wedding; this has grown from 20% in 2009.
66% of international destination wedding brides and 45% of domestic destination wedding brides opted for a destination wedding because they wanted a special, fun or exotic locale.
The second most popular reason why international brides chose a destination wedding was to host a more intimate affair with fewer guests (65%), while domestic brides wanted a destination that was special to them as a couple (44%).

The findings of the study also showed that American couples have been opting for domestic destination weddings over international weddings in the last couple of years and when they did go for exotic international locations for their weddings some of the most popular locations included the Caribbean and Mexico, with 39 per cent of couples in the study going for Caribbean weddings and 24 per cent goings for weddings in Mexico, with Cancun weddings being the most popular.

The survey also showed that on average destination weddings lasted much longer than destination weddings with 60 per cent of those the study lasting three days or more. Of these international weddings abroad lasted the longest with many spanning several days and getting longer on average. According to the study almost 7 in 10 destination weddings abroad last 3 or more days and nearly half (47%) last four or more days, compared with just 38% in 2009.

“The idea of having a destination wedding is growing among our brides, and it goes hand in hand with the fact that most people no longer live where they grew up,” co-founder of XO Group Inc. Carley Roney said “When family is spread all over the country, a destination wedding is the perfect way to bring everyone together.”

Top Trends in 50th Wedding Anniversary Parties

Top Trends in 50th Wedding Anniversary Parties

Besides getting married, there is no day more special than the day on which you celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary. You love your spouse just as much as you did when you first met, so being able to show the world that you two are still as committed to each other as the day when you first said “I do” is a special gift. If you want to surprise your spouse, there are a lot of things you can do, but one of the best ways for you to celebrate is by throwing a wonderful party to commemorate your commitment. Consider working with your children to create the best party possible.

Make the party reminiscent to your wedding.

Make the party special by using the same decorations or colors that were used at your wedding. This is a quaint idea for those who are truly romantics, and who want to remember one of the greatest days of their lives. If you cannot find similar party favors, personalized shot glasses are a perfect party favor to hand out at the beginning of the party. Your guests will appreciate having a thoughtful memento to remember your large celebration, and your spouse will love the fact that you made a personalized gift for everyone to enjoy.

Have professional photos taken.

While at the party, youll want to have every special moment captured. If possible, have a professional photographer attend the event so that none of your friends or family are inconvenienced by the need to take photos of the entire event. Youll end up with great candid shots, as well as some sweet moments captured on film. In addition, have the photographer take photos of you and your spouse to be hung in your home. The fact that you have reached this many years of wedded bliss should be chronicled through film.

Dress for the occasion.

While you might not be able to wear the same wedding clothes that you did when you were first wed, you can still look dapper in a fine new outfit. Purchase a new, elegant suit or dress that you can wear on the day of your celebration. If you left the party a surprise for your spouse, then have an outfit bought for them as well so that they also look their best. Nothing will surprise them more than coming home to find a new outfit for a special occasion waiting for them.

With these tips, you are sure to have a surprised and thankful spouse. He or she will appreciate the effort and thought you have put into preparing this celebration, and the two of you will be prepared to have an even greater celebration of commitment than you would have thought possible.

Importance of Study Skills We’re Never Going to Use This in Real Life

Importance of Study Skills We’re Never Going to Use This in Real Life

When students ignore the importance of study skills because “we’re never going to use this in real life,” I tell them about the time I was programming a video game for fun. Early in college, I was working on a video game where a boulder would fly out of a stick figure’s hand when you hit the space bar (by boulder I mean large circle). The arrow keys pointed the stick figure’s arm in different directions (by arm I mean straight line). The problem was if you pressed any arrow key too long the arm would extend out forever. So I needed to enter in a formula that would tell the computer it was OK to spin the arm around and not OK for the arm to reach out into infinity.

I ended up using the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the problem. (Just in case you don’t remember, it’s the formula used to calculate the legs of a right triangle.) Then it hit me, “Crap, I actually used the Pythagorean Theorem in real life.”

Then another realization hit me, “Writing in ancient PASCAL programming language to make large circles appear out of a straight line on my monitor isn’t real life. It’s probably the furthest thing from it.” Which continues to beg the question, if you really are never going to use a lot of what you learn in school anywhere in your life, ever, why spend all that time with it? Most students spend years on the Pythagorean Theorem. How come? What’s the reason why?

Well, let’s compare all that time a student works with that theorem with lifting weights. When you lift weights, you end up developing your muscles. Though it’s not likely you’re going to have to use those exact weights daily to survive (unless you’re a trainer or physical therapist). In the same way, working with theorems help you develop mental muscles. Though it’s not likely you’re going to have to use those exact theorems daily to survive (unless you’re a math teacher). Instead of working with solid weights to build physical muscle, you are working with abstract ideas to build mental muscle. The classroom is the gym for your mind.

No doubt studying is work just like going to the gym is work. We need strong reasons why to continue doing the work. People who physically work out generally don’t want t be seen as unattractive, fat, and lazy. People who work on their study skills generally don’t want to be seen as stupid, incompetent, and lazy. They don’t want to be the dumbest person in a group. They don’t want to be taken advantage of. They don’t want to be broke. They want others to willingly listen to and follow them. They want others to be attracted to them. They want to be successful in whatever they do. They want to be able to invest their money and make more of it. They understand developing study skills can help them become who they want to be.
